Alean 19.3.
On the "South Africa page" you refer to Unicef, regarding the definition of child labour. This is better than "www.redgoldfish.co.uk", where we do not know if it is a serious source (also I do not find the definition on that page). However, on the "Kaffir Boy page" you still have the redgoldfish reference... ??

@ Alean, 18.03.
The description of the problem is there, look on 11 March. "What we learnd is that we have to save our files on the desktop and not only on the stick because otherwise it might be deleted."
@ Authors 19.03.
You are right, I missed that sentence. Sorry!

  • small comment in the "World page".
  • On 12.3. you unse a hidden expletive to express anger with the computer. What went wrong and what did you learn from the mishap?
  • It is good that you mention the problem with the copyright. The main issue is here that you realize you cannot simply take any pics from Wikipedia either. However, if pics on Wikipedia are published under the GNU licence, you can put it on our Wiki as long as you follow the rules stated under the GNU licence page.
  • By the way we finally solved the problem with uploading.

Gerber: Your journal still lacks reflection. Where was your work/ method successful? Where was it less good? Try to find reasons for this and state what you can learn from your work experience.

23 April

Today we found a new source for "education in the Third World" on the homepage of Unicef. We broadened our text with the new information and wrote something about the rate of analphabets too. Further we explained Samira what we had discussed last time (after the holidays everyone should have written his part so that we will write the conclusion together).
In the Kaffir Boy topic we nearly finished the everyday life in school. What is left is only the tiny part in the book about children who do work (actually not child labour) and a picture.
We began to write the conclusion for education in South Africa, but we are not finish yet. We had to finish the conclusion in the springholidays. But we think that it will not need much time, because we have nearly finished.

22 April

In the internet we found more information about causes for the bad school system in developing countries. We included them in our text and finished it. Further we began to find chances to advance the school system for the future. We also discussed in our group that we will finish our personal part till the end of the spring holiday. On monday or thuesday after the holidays we will sit together do write the final conclusion.
We asked Mr. Gerber about the too modern education manual in South Africa and he told us what the problem was. We wrote some sentences with this new information to the title "big problems". After we continued with the text for the title "colonail education". We almost finished this title and thougt about what we can write for the conclusion.
Samira was still ill and couldn't continue.

21 April 2010

Today we finished the part of the text which describes the facts of education in the Third World. We then began to write down the causes for this facts. So for example the shortage in money or the school system which doesn't function.
We continued at the text to colonial eductaion. But the text is very difficult to understand and so we wrote only one sentence. We began a new topis "Big Problems". Mr. Gerber told us some facts about the problems with education in South Africa. We noticed some catchwords and wrote some sentences. But we had one question about the modern education manuals and we want to ask Mr. Gerber about this in the next english lesson.
Samira coudn't carry on with her work because she was ill.

19 April 2010

Today we continued to write in the Kaffir Boy topic about the everyday life in school. We observed for example the unique moment the father shows generosity. We began to write on the topic colonial education in South Africa. But we could not write many senctences, because the information are difficult to understand and that needs much time. In "education in the Third World" we wrote down the facts we have to know about this topic. After that we continued to comment this facts.

9 April 2010

Today we corrected sProxy-Connection: keep-alive Cache-Control: max-age=0 ething in the Kaffir Boy topic. We also continued to write about daily conflicts in school. We changed the font in our journal on 15 March (one part was written in a different font). So we learned how to handle with text editor.
We continued to write at the main topic education in south africa. We wrote about the universities and the pre-colonial education. The information is from wikipedia and it is very helpful because it is easy to read and to write our own sentences.
We also continued with the topic “education in the Third World“. We read some texts we had found last time and marked the important passages. At the same time we noticed the themes of the texts so that we know about what we can write later on.

8 April 2010

First webegan to write the text for the topic "Three bands of education". But after the first sentence, we remarked that we had to explain the connection between child labour and school in South Africa. We talked about it in the group and dicussed how we want to handle this. We decided that everybody write an own explication because there are other reasons why this two themes are connect or not. We remarked that there are similarities between the explication between in South Africa and in the Third World. We arranged that we look by the other so that we do not repeat anything. After this we wrote the conclusion in South Africa. We took only the most important details and wrote some sentences about this.
Further we started with the new topic about education in the Third World. On the internet we searched information. We noticed some important homepages and wrote down the most interesting themes we can talk about. As a result we will be able to make a list of contents next time.

7 April 2010

Today we get the feedback of our presentation. Mister Alean told us what we had done well and what we can improve.
Alean (7.4.2010): What would that be, exactly, and how are you going to achieve this improvement?
We learned that we shouldn't ask the audience abrupt questions and that it's necessary to arrange exactly what the presentation would be about. Otherwise there is the danger to repeat each other. Mister Alean proposed also to practice a lot to be less nervous. But that doesn't function as we come to know so far.
Then we also had the opportunity to ask some questions. As an example we talked about the problem that the three themes of our topic are very similar and that as a result we have to care attention that we do not repeat information at the presentation. Further we also said that we want to explain the connection between child labour and school at the beginning of the pages. As a result the visiter knows how the two themes influence each other.
We wrote some more information about the reasons for child labour in South Africa. We tried to show why the children forced to work. And we thought about how we want to explain the connection between child labour and education in South Africa.

27 March 2010

Today Mr. Gerber told us informations about school in South Africa. These informations are very important and we want to take these informations in our text. This conversation was very good because now we know much about the school system affair in South Africa. We made notices that we do not forget the informations. Next we continued to correct the faults. Also in the topic of the Third World we continued correcting the mistakes. Samira could not continue with her work as she was ill.

26 March 2010

Today we finished the correction in Kaffir Boy. We also searched the photos for a picture that could be put into this topic. We continued to correct the faults and searched more pictures to the title child labour and school in South Africa. We could take three pictures of the pictures provided by Frau Gerber. In "Child labour in the third World" we continued with the correction of the text and asked mister Alean by upcoming questions.

25 March 2010

Today we started preparing our presentation. Because Nadine was ill on wednesday the other group members eplained her how they split up the presentation. Further we get from mister Gerber the corrected version of our texts and began to correct the mistakes.
We began to write the text introdution for the presentation.

24 March 2010

Today we learned from Mr Alean how to edit links to other pages.
We prepared the presantation (first milestone), for example the procedure.

22 March 2010

We copied the definition of child labour from UNICEF into children in Kaffirboy. Next we continued to write at the title "three bands of education". The problems are the same, that we had to translate many words and it needs much time.
Today we continued to summarise the everyday life in school and to analyse the protagonist's problems during his school time. We also went on to search the book for other passages about child labour.
In "Child labour in the Third World" we corrected the term "child labourer" and tried to rewrite it with other words. Then we read the whole text again to find some other mistakes and to remember what we wrote. Further we also finished the conclusion of “Child labour in the Third World“. We also checked the layout of the text for a second time and made some fiew changes (titles and line spacings).

19 March 2010

One member of our group learned from Mr Alean about editing pages and explained the group how it functions. Then we started editing.
We cleared the line spacings and changed the link. Now we linked the cited text with the number in the brace. In the text of "Child labour in the Third World" we further made an enumeration of the reasons for child labour. We also subdivided the topic "different types of child labour" into bonded and non-bonded child labour. As a result the text has now a clearer structure. Then we continued writing at the title "education in south africa".

18 March 2010

Today we began to summarise the everyday life in school and to analyse the protagonist's problems during his school time. We also started to search the book for other passages about child labour. We also replaced an incorrect word.
We corrected words and wrote one sentence new in the title "previous approaches" in South Africa. Next we read and translated the unknown words from the informations of education in South Africa. We wrote some more about education in South Africa. It was difficult to understand the text from the internet because there are many unknown words. It needs much time to translate and understand the text and to write other senctence than in the text.
In the topic "Child labour in the Third Wold" we replaced the old map with the new one from wikipedia. After mister Alean had load the two pictures on wikispace we could put them into the text. To insure that we act legally we read the GNU free documentation license . There was written that the pictures can be taken and used for own interesses under the condition that the authors of the work must be atributed (the others conditions doesn't matter for us because we don't change the picture). Therefore we made a reference to the map in which we showed the name of the author and the site of wikipedia where we had found the picture. Further we changed the text about "spreading of child labour in the world" and made some new titles.
17 March 2010
Today we worked on the layout of „Child labour in the Third World“. We needed the Wiki Text Editor to change the writing of some parts of the text. Further we spoke with Alean about the map in the text. Because the map is not taken from wikipedia we had to find an other picture. Mister Alean could show us a picture he had found on wikipedia. Now he will send us the two pictures as an E-Mail, because he couldn’t put it on wikispace.
We read the informations about education in South Africa and began to write out some catchwords. Now we had to look more words because there are many unknown terms. But we found this good because on this way we had the right terms and definitions.
We put the reconstructed text into the topic Kaffir Boy. It is a little different but should serve his purpose.
15 March 2010
Today we put the text of „Child labour in the Third World“ on to wikispace. We illustrated it with a picture of the countries where child labour is common and linked the term „ International Labor Organization“. Further we wrote the references we needed on the homepage and linked them. We also made the layout of the text. The next time we will have to write the conclusion of this topic. Then we will also have to comment the picture and show ist reference.
We talked about the formation that we all have the same and we showed another how to link a word or an adress. We thout it is better to talk about this at the beginnig because now all can do it the same way. So we do not have to do it at the end and can save much time.
Next we searched informations about education in South Africa once more. We printed the information which we found and began to arrange these informations. It is more difficult to arrange the information of education in South Africa than of child labour because there are more references. Now we had to look which information is the best and that is not so easy.
12 March 2010
Again we searched informations about education in South Africa. We found a good website. There are good informations and a table with the levels of education. But we didn't kwon if we can take this table. so we asked Mr. Alean and helped us. We had problems to copie the table into wikispace and again we needed the help of Mr. Alean. He showed us how to copie the table into wikispace. Next we searched a foto for child labour and found one from the images provied by Frau Gerber. Then we copied the picture into wikispace. Now it was easy to do this because we knew how it works.
We illustrated the text about "child labour in the Third World" with a picture about the countries where this problem is common and finished writing the text. Maybe we also use an other picture to show how many children are working in which segment (agriculture, industry...). After that we will be finished with this topic and continue with "School in the Third World".
In Kaffir Boy the text is nearly reconstructed.

11 March 2010

After the hang-up of this f***ing MacBook we began to reconstruct the father's refusal of school and the change in Johannes' mind when he sees his mother who's beaten up and the first school day and searched the book for the passages once more. The last three hour's work about Kaffir Boy were very successful, the summary was well understandable, but in the end the work was just waste. What we learnd is that we have to save our files on the desktop and not only on the stick because otherwise it might be deleted.
We began to search information for the new chapter "School in South Africa". But it was very difficult to find good informations in german because the most is about german schools or an exchange year. Now we had to search informations of english and found a good website. We began to read this informations and to translate words which we did not know.
Today we also continued our work to the chapter „Child labour in the Third Wolrld“. We wrote a text about the different consequences of child labour. Further we searched some statistics we may use to illustrate the text about facts.
In general our working method proved its worth. It was a good idea to split up the topics in three qroupes. As a result we can work independent and become experts in one theme. Like this we can work faster because we don’t have to discuss about each detail.

10 March 2010

We searched informations for "standard terms and conditions" and "approaches". Then we noted some catchwords to this two themes and began to translate from german into enlish and to form structured and comprehensilbe text. It was difficult to form a good text because there are many infomations and we must look that the sentences become not too long. First we translated the text for the title "standard terms and conditions" and wrote it into wikispace. Then we linked Apartheid-Regime because we thought that not everyone know this. It is very easy to link something because of the link-button. Next we wrote the text "approaches" and copied it into wikispace. Now we think that the theme child labour in South Africa is finished because we have something about all important themes. It was good that we found a good page at the beginning and could take much informations and structures from this page.

9 March 2010

We finished the text for the title "reasons for child labour in South Africa" and wrote it into wikispace. We spoke with Mr. Alean about the reference, the links and the next action. After we searched reference for the title "regulatory framework" and began to write the text. We finished the text and wrote it into wikispace. It was very heplful to talk with Mr. Alean, because he had good tips for us and he found another good definition of child labour, who is more general because it is a definiton of UNICEF.
In Kaffir boy we continued with the summary and nearly completed the first school day.
In addition we wrote a text with the different reasons for child labour in the Third World and began to search facts and important numbers about children working in development countries.

8 March 2010

We searched the book for passages about the father's refusal of school and the change in Johannes' mind when he sees his mother who's beaten up and began to write a summary.
We wrote few points for the title "Jobs and produces of South Africa". Next we began to wrote the text for the title "reasons for child labour in South Africa".
First we split up the topic "Child labour in the Third World" in the chapters definitions, facts, reasons and consequences. Afterwards we began to write the definition of child labour and the Third World (in a seperate Word-document).
We linked the reference and at last we changed the order of the dates in the Journal.

5 March 2010

We worked on our specific part of the topic: We made research on the internet, searched passages from the book, made chapters in our topics, took notes and began to write our texts.

4 March 2010

We split up the topic in three equal groups: children work & school in Kaffir boy, in South Africa and in the Third World.
Afterwards we began to do research on the internet. For the indtroduction of our texts we wrote the necessar defintion of child labour
We also fixed the date when we want to have finished half of the work of our persoal topic (til 31.3.10).

1 March 2010

We talked about the book and compared the passages we've chosen.

Alean: Please excuse me for pointing this out: But what you write here is a bit trivial. Everybody does this now. Which texts, for example, did you write? How much of it? Is progress satisfactory? Please look at other journals to ge an idea how this could be done! At least your entry from 4. March contains so clear agreements regarding time management. On a formal level: It is better to enter new things on the top, so the most recent entries%
